You may have noticed a slight change in the titles of my blog posts. For example, 6 Surefire Ways to Rank Well in Google, Writing Effective Adcopy for Discounted Google PPC Traffic, and Comparison of Apple’s Stock and Today’s Conference. It’s because I’ve been experimenting with using the titles as link bait. So far, so good. 12% increase in visits, 35% increase in pageviews (beein doing better internal linking), 80% increase in on-page time, and a slight increase in new visitors.
Link baiting is usually perceived as bad, but if you do it right, then it’s not bad at all. By tweaking the titles to sound more interesting, but still reflecting the overall theme of the post, I was able to increase my site statistics by quite a bit.
Here are some things to keep in mind when link baiting:
- Keep the titles interesting - entice your reader to view the post or link to your content
- Keep the titles relevant - you want to build up a loyal readership
- Don’t go overboard - stay with your sites “culture”
Here are some popular link bait topics:
- Create controversial content - it keeps readers coming back to comment and it definitely encourages word of mouth marketing
- Sex sells - and so do beautiful women
- “Cool” or unique content - remember the diet coke and mentos videos?
- Hop on popular trends - apple, google, microsoft, etc.
- Anything extreme - crazy crashes are always fun to watch
Whatever you do, stay with the theme and culture of your blog. Don’t change the theme mid-way, because you’ll more than likely lose all of your current readership (and loyal visitors, commentators, etc).
