Running Targeted Advertising Campaigns Through StumbleUpon - Part 2

After my recent post on running targeted advertising campaigns through stumbleupon that generated some discussion, I figured a followup with a little more information was in order.

  1. Using affiliate links
I could not find any part of the StumbleUpon website that prohibited from using affiliate links, so I gave it a little try. Even though my campaign was approved, the redirect would not work corretly with both shareasale.com and cj.com links. This is mostly due to the way StumbleUpon sends the traffic, which is through a unique url: http://www.stumbleupon.com/refer.php?url=http://yoururl.com/
  2. Gaining backlinks when users give you a “thumbs-up”
There will be a backlink when users give you a “thumbs-up,” but it is tagged “nofollow“. However, there is still the possibility of traffic coming from those links to your website.
  3. Most effective sites
StumbleUpon says, “Some content doesn’t work well with StumbleUpon. A hard-sell offering little introduction or supporting information will seem out of place to StumbleUpon’s community members. Remember that they’re using the service to find something new, something different. Pages that contain little more than a list of ppc or affiliate links also will not perform well.” I could not have said that better. Basically, an adsense or turnkey website will convert (in terms of thumbs-up) very poorly, but a new site that offers something unique and exciting will. The unique site that receives “thumbs-up” will also receive free traffic from those. I’ve run campaigns where the cost per visitor was slightly less than $0.03.

Interesting - I have had little success with my StumbleUpon advertising. I get about 20 clicks a month at about $0.05 per click. I guess I am advertising one of the pages that “doesn’t work well on StubmleUpon”

I have basically given up on this advertising, maybe I just need to tweak it to a different landing page.

thanks again for the tips
