In theory a MySpace web series starring eight young and attractive women just out of college probably sounded like a good idea to Ford when they decided to lend their name and marketing dollars to “Roomates”.
The problem is, “Roommates”, looks really, really bad. I can’t say I was expecting much of a story, but throw in bad writing, bad acting, bad production value, and most annoyingly bad audio and it’s hard to see how Ford is going to benefit from this.
I’m sure the series will be filled with shots of the 2008 Ford Focus as the girls take trips to the beach and travel to shopping malls, but I’m sure whatever audience this show has will be watching the girls not their cars.
The sad truth is that TV shows exist mainly as a vehicle to sell advertising, but I wish more people would realize that quality content benefits both the audience and the advertiser.
On a more positive note
Using mySpace as a venue for a video series provides some interesting opportunities for producers and viewers. Fans will be able to chat with eachother on the Roommates forum, and interact with each of the characters on their mySpace profiles and vlogs. There will also be a real time polling tool for viewers to weigh in with their opinions on certain characters and plot developments. The producers are planning to monitor these interactions between fans and characters, and incorporate them into the plot.
The Show was produced by Iron Sink Media, who have also produced other web series including “WeHoGirls” and “VanNuysGuys.”
Roommates starts on Oct 22nd and will run until Dec 21st. There will be a new 3 minute segment every day at 4PM EDT.
Here is the Roommates trailer, don’t say I didn’t warn you.
