Google has undergone some major updates and changes today as they released them at the Searchology event.
Google as integrated multiple types of media directly into searches via a nifty navigational bar.

Reports are also saying that YouTube videos are embedded into results as well, but when I tried the example searches, I could not find the embedded video (just a normal link).
Google is also going to start including a navigational bar across all Google properties, so mail, video, and more is only one click away at any given time.

Marketing Pilgrim is also reporting major updates to the Google algorithm. They say that
Google is also in the process of deploying a new technical infrastructure that will enable the search engine to handle the computationally intensive tasks required to produce universal search results. The company is also releasing the first stage of an upgraded ranking mechanism that automatically and objectively compares different types of information. As always, Google(TM) search results are ranked automatically by algorithms to deliver the best results to users anywhere in the world.
In other words, Google has figured out a way to provide more relevant results. This is huge and could result in a drastic change for SEM and SEO professionals. With Google displaying results from more sources (scholar, video, etc), SEM and SEO companies may have to start producing short films and writing papers to keep that precious top 10 position for keywords. What a change!
Also released is Google Experimental Search.
This is definitely a large leap forward and I think we’ll be hearing from Google within the next 6 months as to another radical change in search results ranking and the algorithm.
