John Chow dot Com, a popular blog that helps its readers make money online, has a clever link baiting scheme that I just discovered today. Im going to kill three birds with one stone in this post. Im going to review his blog, review the link baiting scheme, and receive a top 100 Technorati link to my blog.
John Chow considers himself a “Dot Com Mogul” and has a pretty impressive background. His blog has over 4,000 subscribed readers, is right around 100 on technorati, and is currently listed at $300 on review me. I’ve been reading his blog for quite some time, on and off, and am overall satisfied with the content. While the “ramblings” are sometimes not of interest, there still is a number of posts that are. He updates pretty often and usually multiple times daily. There are, however, a few things I would change. Firstly, I would remove or drastically cut down the size of the header image (and use thumbnails in posts). Secondly, I would cut down on the amount of “affiliate” linking. For example, there almost always seems to be a post on the frontpage about agloco or his review me page. While I understand he wants his blogging to be profitable, it often becomes a overwhelming.
Next, I’d like to talk about his link baiting scheme. His clever scheme is to ask bloggers to do a review of his blog in exchange for a backlink. Because his site receives a large amount of traffic, is hovering around 100 on the Technorati list, and is PageRank 4, I decided to give it a try. Its clever, because as more bloggers link to his blog, his Technorati ranking is increased (and his search engine rankings), which will get him more traffic and he’ll be able to charge more for a review me review and make more money from advertising. I’m hovering around 135,000 on technorati right now and I’ll post my new ranking after I receive a link from John Chow dot Com.
