The Weekender: Humans Are Mathematically Incompetent

There is an interesting article over at the Wired blog called Why Prices End in 99s: Humans Are Mathematically Incompetent. It is based on a recent study by Cornell University that found that very precise numbers appear lower than numbers that have been rounded off.

The Cornell findings are quite remarkable but I think for this trick of the mind/eye to work the numbers need to be high.
