youTube Expands Its Partner Program

This week Google/youTube announced it is expanding its partner program that allows for creators of original videos to share in a portion of the ad revenue that these videos generate.

youTube ran a pilot program earlier this year, and based on the success of that trial anyone in the United States or Canada can now apply to become a partner.

Anyone can apply, but only those who upload videos on a regular basis, already have a significant audience, and comply with the youTube terms of service will be accepted. It appears that only those people with hundreds of subscribers and thousands, if not millions of monthly viewers will get accepted.

The downside to this, is that you are going to have to produce a lot of videos and build an audience before you have any chance of becoming a partner and making any money.

It is understandable why youTube will not open this up to everyone, because youTube can not allow people to generate ad revenue off of illegally posted copyright material. I would like to see youTube eventually open up the partnership to anyone who is producing original content regardless of audience size. After all, anyone can throw adsense ads up on their blog regardless of traffic volume.

So far the percentage of ad sharing has not been revealed, but I have read that partners who are regularly producing videos with over a million views are earning several thousand dollars per month.

Google is acting dishonestly and outrageously, in concealing the actual terms and not even showing the actual partner agreement until (apparently) you’ve gone through their whole registration/application procedure.

Very sleazy behavior. They want you to essentially apply for “a pig in a poke” without having any clue as to the actual terms or possible earnings.

Google should be more open and upfront, instead of concealing the most important information.
