Many web sites use the NOSCRIPT HTML element to gain very high Page Ranks and search engine rankings for the keywords they want.
The intended use of the NOSCRIPT element is for providing alternate content when a javascript is not executed. When the javascript is executed the content between the NOSCRIPT tag is not displayed. Since 94% of all browsers have javascript enabled, the NOSCRIPT element would be executed 6% of the time.
Google indexes and gives credit for the content (links) with in NOSCRIPT tags. Many companies have taken advantage of Google turning a blind eye to these hidden links to make a lot of money.
Here’s how it works
A company creates a widget that you would like to put on your web site. They provide code for you to put on your site that has a NOSCRIPT tag at the bottom that looks like:
<noscript><a href="http://www.virtualmarketingblog.com">Internet Marketing Blog</a></noscript>
This NOSCRIPT tag gets indexed by Google and the transfer of authority begins. If you don’t want to transfer your link authority to the company that made the widget, you can simply delete the noscript tag or use rel=nofollow on the link.
The companies that create these widgets are able to rank for just about anything they want to in their industry because they determine what text is used to link back to them. Once they rank number 1 for specific keywords, they move on to new keywords. As more people put the widget on their web sites, the web site of the company that created the widget increases in Page Rank. Then they sell links from their web site for thousands of dollars per month, some making almost $1,000,000 yearly off of these paid links.
The usual suspects
The usual suspects are web site traffic counters, weather widgets, online retailers that try to get affiliate marketers to put widgets on their site that promote their goods and services, and those who create internet tools. Many SEOs are guilty of the last one, which might be why there isn’t much talk about this in the SEO community.
How to take advantage of NOSCRIPT
In an ideal world with an ideal search algorithm, Google would give content and links with in NOSCRIPT tags 6% of the regular credit that normal content gets. But since Google indexes these hidden links and gives full credit for them, we might as well take advantage of it. A savvy Internet marketer could:
- Create a Wordpress plugin that includes a NOSCRIPT hidden link.
- Create an Internet marketing tool that every Internet marketer has to have on their site.
- Create a Facebook Widget that includes a NOSCRIPT hidden link. Facebook is soon to open up it’s pages to Google.
- Put a NOSCRIPT hidden link on any web sites you design or develop for a client.
Until Google stops turning a blind eye to the NOSCRIPT tag try to use it to your advantage.
