A Lesson in Internet Marketing Cross Promotion

What do a feature length film, an outdoor leadership school, a discount travel agency, and a TV production company have in common?

Quite a bit actually, and that is why the Paramount Vantage film “Into the Wild“, the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS), TravelWorm and Lonely Planet TV have come together to create a user generated video contest.

The contest webpage states:

Compile a 2 minute (or less) short video based around the theme Lose Yourself. This video should express a moment where you felt connected to nature or completely free - a moment of escape. You could compile the video from previous footage you’ve shot or create new footage to express your escapist moment.

The submission deadline is October 23rd 2007 and the winner will receive an adventure vacation courtesy of NOLS, TravelWorm, and lonely Planet TV.

The goal of of the contest is to promote the film release and of course the participating companies themselves. One of the great things about cross promotion is that you get to share the cost and the labor, and by having 4 partners, the contest has the potential to reach a larger audience.

Also if you choose your partners wisely, there will be benefit by association. I have never heard of NOFL, or TravelWorm, but I am a big fan of all things Lonely Planet, so my positive feeling towards Lonely Planet might transfer over and influence my first impression of these two new brands.

Another thing to notice is that these three companies and the film are all related to travel and adventure in some way, but they are not in direct competition with each other. They each have something unique to offer, and they each have something to gain.

If cross promotion is currently not part of your marketing plans, take a minute and ask yourself if there are any companies that you might want to start a partnership with.

For those of you interested in the movie, here is the trailer.

Another example of cross promotion is using music videos to promote a film, and a film soundtrack. Here is Eddie Vedder covering “Hard Sun” in a promotional music video for “Into the Wild”.

Hi Rumyan, what specific questions would you like to know about business marketing and internet marketing? They go hand in hand, and they are both very diverse topics.

I can start by recommending a book I am currently reading called The New Rules of Marketing & PR by David Meerman Scott. I am about 3/4 of the way through the book and so far it is great. I’m planning on posting a review of it once I have finished.

And Shane, I’m afraid my “Loose Yourself” video would feature me sitting in a coffee shop drinking a double americano and reading a marketing book. I’m not sure if that would get me too far in the contest.

I can verify Nials “loose yourself” video. I’ve seen him in action.

But If there was a video contest that included where to find the best americano anywhere in the world, he could tell you the top ten and win without question.

Maybe Internet marketing blog should set up there own video contest on youtube? Tracking the results and seeing how beneficial a video contest can drive traffic and create buzz.

However, Nial, you couldn’t win since you be an affiliate… sorry.

Great post! I really enjoyed it. Its interesting to see companies do affiliate marketing and sponsorship. It seems to be a very popular trend that has really taken off over the past 10 years. It’s been around for ages but it was become more widely used and consumers and clients have been able to really see the benefits.
