Nielson Co. one of the worlds largest marketing research companies, and the people who bring us our TV ratings and Nielson NetRating has launched their own social network called Hey! Nielson.
I applaud them for the transparency of placing “Nielson” in the company name, because they could have just as easily kept this affiliation a lot more low key.
The new social network is a place for users to share their opinions on TV, movies, music, personalities and the internet. All the things that Nielson writes marketing reports on.
The site is well laid out with a Digg like opinion section that allows you to create your own comment, react to another persons comment, or rate a show.
There is also a ranking section where you can see what items are most popular. This is how Nielson descibes their ranking section.
Each topic (TV show, Movie, etc.) earns a Hey! Nielsen Score, determined by user opinions, comments, and ratings. Calculated daily, the Hey! Nielsen Score also factors in internet buzz via BlogPulse.com.
There is no question that this site will become popular with internet marketers trying to game the rankings (If you are promoting a TV show send people here to hype it, if you released a new album tell your fans to head over to Nielson to talk about it). But in order for the site to be a true reflection of public opinion there needs to be a large general audience contributing, not just marketers and Nielson employees.
I think it is a smart move for Nielson to attempt a social opinion site, the question is whether the public will participate.
At the time of this posting Hey! Neilson was both the #1 and #4 most popular site on the internet.
