With the recent launch of the iPhone and many more Americans having access to the mobile internet, it’s time to start thinking about landing pages for mobile phones. Whether you use a wordpress plugin or redirect mobile traffic to a subdirectory, there are some common changes and points that you need to be aware of.
Strip out flash
Very few US phones support flash. Also, the speed of many cell networks is only 4-6 times faster than dial-up, so flash movies may take considerable amount of time to download.
Use text instead of images
Most mobile phones can resize fonts much easier than images.
Make forms larger than normal
Larger than normal forms make inputing passwords, usernames, and other information much easier.
Don’t worry about SEO
Cell phones use the same search engines that desktops use. Concentrate on your main SEO and just redirect the mobile traffic to a site designed for usability, not SEO.
Remove unnecessary text and images
Keep from having those long pages with 10,000 folds. Make it simple - clean - fluent.
TEST!
Pull up your website on a mobile phone and test it out. Then give it to someone a generation older than you and have them navigate the site.
