I’m asked and I see postings on the DigitalPoint forums all the time on how to increase PageRank. We don’t know a lot about PageRank, but we do know some. For example, we know that inbound links help increase PageRank, but we just don’t know the exact formula.
If you didn’t know, PageRank is:
a family of algorithms for assigning numerical weightings to hyperlinked documents (or web pages) indexed by a search engine. The PageRank system is used by the popular search engine Google to help determine a page’s relevance or importance. It was developed by Google’s founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin while at Stanford University in 1998.
PageRank doesn’t directly related to rankings, the measures taken to increase PageRank may help increase rankings (like link building). Techniques increase PageRank and techniques increase Results. Pagerank does not increase results. So why do webmasters want to increase their PageRank? Most of the time it’s because they are selling advertisements and a higher PageRank website can usually sell advertisements for more money. For example, Text-Link-Ads (a website that sells text links), uses PageRank for calculating how much a link will cost. PageRank is also one of the most common ways for webmasters to show off their site.
PageRank updates about every 3 months, with the last taking place in April. (Technically it’s updated all the time, but I won’t go into that in this post). With that being said, the next update should be towards the end of July to the beginning of August.
The most common way is to build backlinks. The more “higher quality” backlinks you have pointing to your site, the higher your PageRank will be. You can buy text links, write and distribute articles, comment on other blogs, submit to directories, build Squidoo lenses, forum signature, sponsor templates, and other link building techniques. I say high quality, because Google will now count links from link farms, “shady” sites, and “nofollow” links.
Another way to increase your PageRank is to add pages to your site. Google LOVES fresh and new content, especially when it is all linked together.
If you get stuck, then check out this website on raising your pagerank (it’s a joke).
