To increase the number of comments, many WordPress users have installed a Top Commentators plugin that displays the top commentators and how many posts they have made. Most of the time, the top commentator links are not tagged “nofollow” giving them search engine credibility and weight.
I’m currently a top commentator on 12 entrepreneurship and marketing blogs with one of them being an Alexa top 10,000 site. All of them have a pagerank of 3 and a few are even a 6. The average link price would be about $40 if just purchased, so $40 * 12 = $480/mo in free links. Most blogs need about 1 comment a day (some more, some less) to stay on the top comentators list. I spend about 20 minutes a day commenting, so that is 10 hours per month, or $48 / hour in free links. That does not include the time it takes to read the articles, but they are articles I would more than likely be reading anyways.
A link on John Chow will cost you $200 through Text-Link-Ads, but if you can make about 6 comments per day, you can easily stay on the top commentators list (show below).

When commenting on other people’s blogs, make sure comments are relevant. I make mine about 2-3 sentences long and ask questions or provide feedback. “One liners” or comments that could be applied to other posts are not acceptable and would be borderline spam. Check to see if the website has a comment policy or not. Put your keywords (If you don’t know the target keywords for your site, I would use this keyword suggestion tool) in the name and make sure you use a real email address. Here is a post from John Chow that covers the topic of top commentators.

On the flipside of this, as a blogger, all those recent commenters/top commenters plugins can actually cost you money.
Following what you’ve said here is a much cheaper way of getting links for the buyers, but hurts the bloggers bottom line

Yes, I can cost a blogger money, but it can also create more loyalty, discussion, and return visitors. Another negative point is that it does increase outbound links. Great point.

Isn’t putting keywords in the name field kind of….spammy?

No, but be sure to check any comment policy the site may have. I wouldn’t put keywords that don’t related either. Also, some sites, as mentioned in the post, encourage the use of keywords. Top Commentators plugin is meant to reward those who comment often. Also, make sure you are writing USEFUL comments. I would consider comments that can be applied to more than one post spam. For example, comments like “hey great post, thanks” or “nice point” and “well written.”

You’re right, although I don’t see one on this blog… mmm
It can be a good way to get backlinks, but as you say, it has to be relevant comments. Plus, don’t just go doing it on random blogs. Make it as closely related to your blog as possible.
I’ll probably add Top Commentators on my blogs, too… just to get the comments flowing more.
Come on over and add a few

I own a new startup and I’m getting real serious about building links. I think this is a good way to do it since the bloggers get more comments and the poster gets more links. I don’t see why bloggers wouldn’t like having more posts on their blog. This is also a good way to get people to start commenting on my blogs.
