Creating stupid, and sometimes annoying, images and other content can have positive impacts on a website or company. Take the following picture for example:

While I know for a fact this image was not made by Crikey’s or a company representing them, it provides a perfect example of using an image for marketing. It contains the company’s name in the speech bubble, a picture of their product, and a well known figure.
It may seem like an odd way of marketing, but in todays social and networking world, it can spread very quickly. People like to share funny pictures and this image could be viewed by a few hundred thousand in just a few days. It is also a create way to create inbound links if you are hosting the image yourself - it is essentially a form of link baiting.
There are a few negative impacts that need to be mentioned too. The first is reputation. Sometimes the image may be seen as offensive and could actually do more harm to a website or company as well. This type of marketing works well with websites or companies that do not have to worry as much about reputation as others. The other large negative impact is the use of copyrighed images and possible legal actions that may be taken.
