While a relatively new marketing concept, avatar advertising seems to be having a positive impact on the sites which venture into this relatively untested marketing method. I first came across it at the beginning of December, on the digitalpoint forums, when two major directories, site-sift.com and sevenseek.com, bought a number of the members avatars. The results are shown below (the purchases were at the beginning of December):

There was a noticeable increase in traffic, however it quickly declined. I attribute most of the traffic due to the controversy and discussion it sparked on the forum, but it was a result of the purchases of avatars. Avatar advertising however could be a widely accepted form of advertising, because unlike text links, you can receive brand recognition as well as traffic. The potential reach is tremendous, because many of the latest social networking sites such as d*gg.com, facebook.com, and myspace.com all have an avatar or user image associated with every profile.
