Rand Fishkin of SEOmoz.org said to me in an interview that the title tags are the most important ranking factor in organic search engine optimization. Personally, I think it’s the third most important ranking factor (inbound links and terms on site I consider to be more important), but it’s still EXTREMELY important. So here is how to write solid title tags so your website can rank higher and get free, targeted traffic.
Do your keyword research. Know the popularity of terms (how often they are searched), if plural or singular forms are searched, and know which best describes your page. I usually pick 1-3 (max!) keywords (or 2-3 word search terms) that stand out (usually by volume) and use those. If only 1 stands out, then use only 1. Don’t force the keywords.
Incorporate the keywords into your title before your brand. However, if you have a very strong and well known brand, then place your brand before the keywords. Separate the keywords with commas and do not use the word “and.”
Strong brand first then solid keywords following:
Barnes & Noble.com - Books, Used & Out of Print, Textbooks, Children’s Books, DVDs, Music, Toys
Strong keywords then weak brand following:
Student Loans, Student Loan Consolidation - Consolidate College Loans with NextStudent
Hopefully this helps. I know I need to work on my keywords and use dynamic titles, but that is for another post.
