As many of you should be aware of by know, Google updated it’s Page Rank last week.
Part of the Page Rank update included lowering the Page Rank of many web sites that were selling links.
By lowering the Page Rank for web sites that sell links, Google tried to do two things:
- Decrease the perceived value of links that are being sold - Since most link brokers use Page Rank as a factor in evaluating the worth of links, lowering the Page Rank of web sites that sell links would cause the value of those links to go down considerably. A site that use to have a PR7 could sell a link for $200. With a PR4 that same link might go for $25.
- Fear people into not selling links - Google wants web site owners to think that this is just the start of what’s to come for those who sell links. First it’s Page Rank. Then it’s rankings. And it is working. I spoke with a lady last week who makes over $3000 a month from selling links across her network of sites. Her Page Rank went from a 7 to a 4. She has decided to stop selling links because she is afraid that Google might punish her in the rankings, if she continues to sell them.
Some web site owners will act like the lady I spoke with last week. However many will start acting more secretively when it comes to selling links.
5 Ways to stay under Google’s Radar
If you still want to sell links and stay under Google’s radar, you might want to try the following:
- Only sell links to sites that are relevant to yours. That means no Viagra links on your fashion web site.
- Don’t advertise that you sell links on your site. That means no ‘Want to see your link here?’ buttons.
- Try making the links blend in with your site. That means not having text that says ’sponsored links’ before the links.
- Keep side-wide paid links to a minimum.
- Try selling links that are part of the copy and not stuck on the side or at the bottom of the site.
These are just a few ways to sell links while avoiding the wrath of Google. The future of link selling is likely to be a more secretive marketplace that involves more communicating directly with the web sites you want to buy links from and less use of link brokers like Text Link Ads.
