Two of the biggest names in Hip Hop are embracing youTube as a marketing and promotional outlet.
Diddy (Sean Combs) started things off two weeks ago by creating his own video help-wanted ad for a new personal assistant and posting it on youTube.
He encouraged applicants to upload their video resumes to his newly created youTube group. Over 600 applicants have already submitted videos. Knowing Diddy’s promotional skills, this stunt has as much to do with self promotion as it does with using youTube as an alternative to placing a classified ad.
50 Cent has his own video promoting youTube’s first ever rap video contest where the winner will receive $10,000 from Guitar Center and their single produced by G-Unit / Interscope. 50 Cent along, with Common and Da Don will be selecting the top 20 finalists, then voting will be turned over to the youTube masses. There will be cross promotion between youTube.com, 50Cent.com and Interscope.com, and 50 Cent conveniently has a new album coming out September 11th.
Both Diddy and 50 Cent are using youTube for a unique purpose, but they are both savvy enough to know that youTube is more than just a broadcast medium. Both campaigns involve getting their fans to participate by creating and uploading video.
I saw this the other day. Very cool. Viral site going viral. Hmmmm…

I find it interesting that both ideas have already been used on reality TV (The Aprentice and American Idol). Does this mean reality TV is migrating to youTube?

Piggybacking a large userbase site would be the first logical step towards full reality TV. However, in the future, I see reality TV moving towards a Joost type platform, but still utilizing user submitted videos.
