Heavy.com has created the Husky Network to market it’s own brand of ad supported video network. It consists of surrounding or wrapping a video player with a large static ad.
Publishers would have a choice of embedding the ad supported video into their web pages, or alternatively having the ad and video open in a pop up or an overlay. Anyone familiar with watching videos on Heavy.com will already be familiar with the format.

Except on Heavy.com there is an additional full page 2-3 second static ad before you get to watch the video. I’m sure advertisers are happy with the enormous size of the advertising wrap (990×520), but I’m sure the size will turn off many publishers and viewers. There is no word if Husky is planning on allowing for alternative wrap sizes. It is a little obnoxious for my taste, but as a viewer, if the video I came to watch is good, I’ll gladly stay and watch it.
I’m all in favor of ad supported video, I’m just not sure this is the right formula for everyone. And that’s the great thing about internet marketing, there doesn’t have to be a one size fits all solution. Advertisers, publishers and consumers will all have a say it what works best for them. Whether it’s banners, pre-roll, post-roll, bugs, skins, or tickers, ad supported video is here to stay.
