eBay will be expanding their ad auction system to radio with Bid4Spot, as reported by TechCrunch. The announcement puts eBay in direct competition with Google, which acquired dMarc Broadcasting, a Bid4Spot competitor, for over $1 billion. Google recently launched it’s audio ad auction system has also recently struck a deal with Clear Channel radio to sell ads across 675 stations. Google also started selling ad space on Dish Networks channels.
It appears eBay is going to have it’s hands full figuring out how to beat Google. While I don’t think they will, it will be interesting to see how eBay fairs, since it is relatively new to advertising. Also in very recent news, eBay acquired StumbleUpon.
One point Nick Gonzalez touches on is that
It doesn’t appear that eBay is assisting advertisers in creating spots, something that is crucial to getting smaller advertisers to participate. Google is helping with ad creation, as does competitor Voices.com.
