I read a post on Shoemoney’s blog today that talked about a site called Subvert and Profit. Subvert and Profit is a site that allows “advertisers” to pay a fluctuating price for (it’s currently at $1) a digg, helping the site reach the frontpage of Digg. The site then pays $.50 per digg to the actual digger. The site claims that it is
50 to 100 times more cost effective than conventional Internet advertising. Our cost per click is about $0.003, whereas the cost per click of conventional Internet advertising (such as Google AdWords) is about $0.15. Through Subvert and Profit, it costs about $75 to get a story on the front page of Digg, where it will receive about 25,000 clicks.
However, you have to consider two things:
- The quality of Digg’s traffic is very low. User will usually visit a page for a short amount of time then quickly leave - costing the site loads of bandwidth.
- If the site is not in line with Digg’s target market (or is of poor quality), the site will more than likely be buried in a short amount of time.
Ethically I dont think it is right, considering it violates Digg’s TOS and Subvert and Profit knows it.
Violating Digg’s Terms of Use is not illegal. Digg can, however, delete your account if you violate its Terms of Use. We encourage you to violate Digg’s Terms of Use at your own risk
I signed up as an advertiser to post screenshots of the backend, but apparently it is not live yet. Anyways, I do not think this site will be around for very long and hope it does not ruin the atmosphere of Digg.
