Hitwise has released the May 2007 search engine market share data. It looks like Google’s growth has plateaued and it Ask and Yahoo! have gained slightly. Google lost .13% to 65.13%, Yahoo gained .16% to 20.89%, MSN lost .06% to 8.40%, and Ask gained .23% to 3.92% total share.
Marketing Pilgrim writes:
Ask fared the best in growth this month. Perhaps their algorithm commercials are paying off (â€Âchicks with swords†premiered this month). Not only was their numerical growth the largest of any search engine (up 0.23 percentage points), but their relative growth was seven times that of the next largest relative growth percentage. Ask’s numbers were up 5.9% over April’s. Which just goes to show you that when your market share is very small, even very small changes can look huge.

That’s interesting. Check out this press release from comScore: http://www.comscore.com/press/.....press=1482
It highlights where the internet had traffic spikes in May. It also points out that there were 10 million more unique visitors to Yahoo! sites than Google sites AND Yahoo’s ad reach was 9% higher than Google’s ad reach. Hmmmm….
Interesting stuff.

Lets see… at the current rate of growth for each of the three search engines, Google, Ask, and Yahoo it will take about 21 years for Google to feel the heat from the other two. That is twenty-one years if Google were standing still (or going backards)and the other two were super charged every month - not a likely set of events.
In the history of business, it isn’t the followers who catch the leader - instead, the followers have to say close and when the leader tires or makes a mistake (which they all seem to do sooner or later)that is the time to overtake and pass.
