Today, 1800flowers.comlaunched a mobile phone version of their website at 1800flowers.mobi.
1800flowers.mobi allows users to shop for flowers by a variety of occasion categories, including birthdays, anniversaries, get well and same-day delivery. If users have an existing account at 1800flowers.com, they can access it from the 1800flowers.mobi site; additionally, they can check an order’s status directly from the .mobi site.
Christopher Barca, Director of Website Merchandising at 1800flowers.com, said:
Our .mobi site lets mobile customers see a wide variety of floral arrangements with the ability to access their accounts from a mobile phone.
Again, 1800flowers is ahead in internet marketing. First Second Life and now .mobi. For what I know, this is the first major use of the .mobi domain, which as mobile phone screen resolutions get better, will eventually fade out (my opinion). By being one of the first, look at all the free promotion and publicity they are receiving. And while I would think it to be better to redirect mobile traffic to m.1800flowers.com, it still is a neat edge that they have. Now husbands can wait until the ride home from work to order flowers.
Addition: After having some time to look at the site, it appears they optimized for mobile phone traffic correctly.
